Danakil Depression

The Danakil Depression is one of Earth's most extreme and alien landscapes—a geological wonderland that sits up to 125 meters below sea level in the Afar Triangle where three tectonic plates are slowly pulling apart. This is one of the hottest inhabited places on the planet, with temperatures regularly exceeding 50°C.

The region's extraordinary features include Dallol, a hydrothermal field of vivid yellow, green, and orange mineral formations created by hot springs pushing through salt deposits. Nearby, the ancient salt flats of Lake Asale have been mined by Afar tribespeople for centuries, with camel caravans still transporting salt blocks along traditional routes.

For the adventurous, Erta Ale ("Smoking Mountain") offers the rare opportunity to peer into a permanently active lava lake—one of only a handful in the world. The journey requires careful planning and experienced guides, but rewards visitors with landscapes that seem to belong to another planet entirely.
