St George Cathedral – A Historic Landmark

St George Cathedral (Kidus Giorgis) is one of the most historically significant churches in Ethiopia, built in 1896 to commemorate Ethiopia's victory over Italy at the Battle of Adwa. This octagonal-shaped cathedral represents a pivotal moment in African history—the preservation of Ethiopian independence during the Scramble for Africa.

The cathedral was the site of Emperor Haile Selassie's coronation in 1930, a grand ceremony that drew dignitaries from around the world. Its distinctive architecture blends traditional Ethiopian Orthodox design with influences from the era, featuring a unique octagonal structure symbolizing the resurrection of Christ.

Inside, visitors can admire religious paintings, historical artifacts, and a museum that houses crowns, ceremonial items, and treasures from various Ethiopian emperors. The cathedral grounds are peaceful and offer insight into Ethiopia's royal and religious heritage.
